RESISTING CARTOGRAPHY (Terra australis incognita)
This installation focuses on the ways in which past cartographic techniques used to discover the Antarctic continent are in relation to the contemporary technologies used to view the site from above. The handmade paper is made of over eighty maps of the Antarctic from the period of discovery, blended into a pulp, and then shaped and dried into papers that curve and hold texture. Cyanotypes of contemporary mapping methods, like satellite and radar, are printed onto the surface.
